We believe that Sue Monk Kidd is a great artist because she is so influential to not only teenagers but to all women. She stresses the importance of motherhood and family but also at the same time empowers women to be themselves and not to be confined to gender stereotypes. She does this in many ways in all of her novels by making a woman the main character and having her struggle with stereotypes and having them overcome them through their journey. In all of her books she tries to convey her culture and spirituality to the reader so that woman of all ages, race, and ethnicity can relate. Sue Monk Kidd portrays the idea of a great artist because she is able to let woman overcome these stereotypical ideas of a woman but allow them to realize what is important to them, which is being themselves and not let anyone oppress them. She demonstrates feminism through her writing by illustrating settings of spiritual conquest; feminist theology and motherhood and this is what makes her an exceptional and influential artist.

I have to agree that Sue Monk Kidd is an incredible influence for women of all ages. Her works illustrates stories of strong independent women who overcome certain obstacles. As far as can I tell, finding one's identity is a predominant theme in some of her works. Do you think that her works will continue to influence different women twenty or fifty years from now?
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog and is very creative. I am impressed with the professional look and details of the blog. Great job! I like how you all were able to connect three different books of Kidd's to the topics learned in class. You did a great job at summarizing the novels and incorporating the themes of the novel with the themes of the class. I also liked how you added the pictures and youtube videos within the blog.
ReplyDeleteMy only question would be how does Lily's quest for spirituality tie into the themes of the class? Can you elaborate on the connection between this story and Kidd's ideas in this novel to the themes of the course? I just want to better understand this because it seems that The Secret Life of Bees is Kidd's most recognized book but I have never read it.
Other than that this blog looks great! Great job on making a professional and creative blog!
The blog is very captivating and I highly enjoyed reading all about Sue Monk Kidd. She seems like a creative author. I found it interesting that she uses fictional metaphors to help write her stories, because she is such a spiritual individual. Usually these things don't go together when someone is trying to make an argument. In Sue Monk Kidd's case, she is trying to influence women to be who they truly want to be, not a passive figure under the control of other beings, especially men.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the blog! I'm very interested in reading The Mermaid Chair now after watching the trailer for the movie, and reading the synopsis of the story.
Fantastic job on the blog! The Secret Life of Bees is one of my favorite books and movie. I think you did a great job summarizing each novel and relating the themes back to the class. For example, in the Secret Life of Bees, I think you described how Lily grew up in a patriarchal society and overcame oppression very well. Again, great job on the blog!
ReplyDeleteI chose your blog first because I did my research on Sue Monk Kidd, and discussed her book The Secret Life of Bees. I think you all did an amazing job summarizing her life background and her two books, they were accurate and succinct. I was not familiar with The Mermaid's Chair, I had only heard about it while doing my research, but your blog really helped me to understand what the book was like. I watched you youtube clip and it made me want to see The Mermaid's Chair. I was surprised to see that both her book you discussed were made into movies, I think that just shows what a truly amazing writer she is, and also how strong her messages are towards women. I think she truly inspires women to be strong and be their own person, something that I really believe in. Overall, your blog was very well crafted and designed, as well as organized. It looks great, good job!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very well done blog and I feel that your depiction of Sue Monk Kidd is a well done description of the author. I found it interesting that she was raised in Georgia and her most popular novel was set in the South. It is very clear that she used her upbringing to create a sense of validity for her novel. I feel that her message of empowering women in her novels is something that makes this author so unique. From your blog it was clear that she focuses her theme on making women power figures in society. Great bog I found it to be very informative and interesting. I look forward to reading more of her novels in the future!
ReplyDeleteOfelia, thanks for taking an interest in Sue Monk Kidd. I do believe that she will keep inspiring people, and even giving that moral support to women that need to be strong and not be oppressed by social laws or men. what is interesting of her is that she uses spirituality to enhance her ideas, and this appeals to many women that are having trouble with something in their life.
